Peugeot 308 wagon makes global debut in Melbourne
Peugeot's decision to give the 308 station wagon its world premiere at Melbourne was a measure of the importance Peugeot places on the Australian market.
The company has just launched the five door hatch version but has succeeded in pressuring head office to give it early access to the wagon, which usually follows a year later. The 308 wagon will reach Australia around the middle of the year, about the same time Peugeot will launch the tin 107 model made by the Toyota joint venture in the Czech Republic.Visiting group vice-president of sales and marketing Bernd Schantz(OK) said Australia was a key market for Peugeot and could expect to be the focus of even more attention in future.
"We are very confident of future Peugeot success in Australia and you can expect to see many other models in coming years," Mr Schantz said."Our growth has been spectacular in Australia and I think that is because our product range fits the market so well.''
He said Peugeot's expertise in diesel engines was fundamental to Peugeot and the company already had one 308 model in Europe that emitted just 120 grams of CO2 a kilometre.
He said Peugeot would release its first hybrid, a diesel/electric model, in 2010.
"Australia will get this model, of course."
He said Peugeot was also working on making stop-start technology available across the whole range, including automatics, which sell well in Australia but do not always get the latest technology because Europe prefers manual transmissions.
