How did you start your research towards finding your perfect car?

I spoke with Peter Kallitsis, Group General Manager of Trivett, about an appropriate replacement for my Jaguar S Type, and, after considering other models, I test drove a Volvo.

What made you select your current car?

It was time to indulge in a Convertible.

Classical.

After graduating from Sydney University in 1960 with an Arts degree and an honours degree in Law, Mahla practised as a solicitor, until she was elevated to the Bench as Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales in April 1992.

Trivett Tyres Parramatta is now an RTA Authorised Restraint Fitting Station

Trivett Tyres- Parramatta has recently become accredited by the RTA as an Authorised Restraint Fitting Station and are now allowed to install all forms of baby capsules, child seats, booster cushions and booster seats into a variety of vehicles.

Fitments can be carried out Monday to Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday 8am -12noon, most installations will be on a while you wait basis however some of the installations are a more time consuming and therefore we will require these vehicles to be pre-booked and left with us to carry out the installation.

It is recommended that the child who will be using the seat is present at some point during the installation, the position of the child in the seat is as important as the position of the seat in the car, however we understand this is not always possible and in these cases we will fit the seat and adjust it to the best of our ability without the child being present.

We have a range of additional brackets and belts in stock to enable us to fit most seats and restraints, these will be charged according to the price list below, however for more involved and complicated fitments we may need to order the relevant brackets and belts.

To suit the job required, please note we do not supply any seats or restraints we only install them.

Car company exempted from sex discrimination laws

The New South Wales Anti-Discrimination Board has granted a car company an exemption allowing it to hire only female sales consultants.

The prestige car company Trivett Cars was granted the exemption from sex discrimination laws for two years.

In a statement on its website, Trivett Cars says the ruling will create an opportunity to address the gender imbalance in the industry and help develop stronger relationships with women customers.

President of the Anti-Discrimination Board Stepan Kerkyasharian, says the decision was made to change the traditional perception of the car sales industry as male-dominated.

But he says the company will still be required to hire women based on merit.

"The perception that it is only a place for men to work in, that it is a business that is transacted by men had to be overridden, it had to change," he said.

"The perception had to change and that was a good enough reason to grant them the exemption for two years."

NSW Anti-Discrimination Board Allows Recruitment of Female Only Staff to Address Gender Imbalance

24 September 2010, Australia – The Australian car sales and service industry is set to undergo a female facelift thanks to the actions of a leading automotive group.

Trivett, Australia’s leading and most prestigious automotive group, has received an exemption from the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board following a successful application to go on the hunt for female only car sales and service providers – addressing the industry’s traditional gender imbalance.

This is the first time such an exemption has been granted to the Australian automotive industry by the Board and is one of only of two exemptions it has granted in 2010 in total. The exemption follows six months of intense planning and preparation by Trivett, which continues to lead the industry by example, by setting new standards and practices.

Trivett’s Group General Manager Kirsty Duncan says she’s thrilled with the Board’s decision and looks forward to making a positive impact for Trivett’s staff and customers alike.

“Most people know that males traditionally dominate the automotive industry, yet that’s not necessarily in keeping with the current needs of our customers. Women are a vital addition to this environment and we need to increase their representation in this sector.

“A recent survey of our customer database found that female customers enjoy dealing with females and in some cases prefer it. Furthermore, women are now significant influencers of car purchasing decisions, making up roughly 60% of our car buying population.”

“With the granting of this exemption, the industry can now take a significant step forward and we’re delighted to be at the forefront of the action,” she finished.

Many women may not have considered that Trivett or the sector can offer them a career path that is fun, lucrative, flexible and professionally rewarding. The Group now seeks to change this perception by increasing the percentage of female sales consultants from 8% female to 25% female over the course of the two-year exemption period. Trivett will also continue to hire male staff across its business as it continues to grow.

Concurrently, Trivett is introducing new forms of training for its existing employees, who will shortly undergo an etiquette and workplace behaviour training program, looking at communication styles and faux pas to avoid! This is designed to better their understanding of female customers and their needs.

A new website www.trivettwomen.com.au will likewise provide women with empowering tips on mechanical repairs, how to choose a car, and how to source the right finance and insurance – alleviating some of the related confusion.

About the Exemption

Trivett provided a comprehensive application to the Anti Discrimination Board for an exemption under Section 25 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW), and was granted approval in late August 2010. The Exemption will effectively allow the Trivett Group to increase the number of women employed by the business whilst continuing to promote equal opportunities amongst all people.

SYDNEY'S car sales industry seems to have been dominated by snappily dressed, well-coiffed men since the horse and cart were put out to pasture.

But the male domination of the car yard will soon end - at least for one local company.

High-end retailer Trivett Cars has been granted an exemption from sex discrimination laws so that it can hire only saleswomen for its 22 dealerships in western Sydney and Melbourne.

Trivett hopes that by increasing the proportion of women among its sales and service staff it will attract female customers who are sick of patronising questions like, ''Is your husband around?'' or ''Wouldn't you prefer something yellow?''

The company hopes to increase the proportion of women from 8 per cent to 25 per cent.

''We surveyed our customer database and found women were more relaxed and enjoyed the experience of buying a car with a female sales consultant,'' Trivett's general manager, Kirsty Duncan, said.

''With the industry being so male-dominated they can probably relate to them better and, overall, the experience is more enjoyable for them.''

It is the second time the NSW anti-discrimination board has exempted a NSW company from sex discrimination laws. Its president, Stepan Kerkyasharian, said he hoped the decision would send a message to the car industry.

''Fifty per cent of the customers in the car industry are women, but the industry is almost completely male-dominated and is has been for some time,'' he said.

Sales consultant Sandra Maric was careful not the criticise her male colleagues but conceded that women ''felt more comfortable when they felt they were being taken seriously''.

''It's a matter of focusing on their needs,'' she said.

Eva Cox, from the Women's Electoral Lobby, said she hoped the company would recruit women for their ability
and rather than ''simply whether they are young and pretty''.

Czech car brand Škoda is relatively new to the Australian car market. But with the new Octavia, Škoda could be the car that establishes a firm Škoda Australian customer base. The sleek and elegantly designed vehicle is available at an under $25,000 price tag, and is sure to (literally) give other midsized models on the Australian market a run for their money. Now part of the Volkswagon Group, the Škoda Octavia bears resemblance to the VW Passat in both looks and superior driving performance. The 2011 Škoda Octavia is available in both hatch and wagon models and while the car offers interior space, the compact hatch design is perfect for inner city driving.

What exactly can you expect from the Škoda Octavia?

- Design. The classic and simple design of the Octavia is aesthetically pleasing. The design’s emphasis on interior space and legroom makes it spacious and a comfortable passenger car, with room for luggage as well. The technology of the car is seamlessly fused with design.

- Comfort. Added to the spacious interior are a number of other features for maximum driving comfort. Drivers of the Octavia will enjoy a front seat heating system, semi automatic or climate control air conditioning, a navigation and multimedia systems, a cooled centre console and decorative trims.

- Safety. The Octavia includes all the latest safety technology. Equipped with an ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program) system the car incorporates ABS, EBD, and ASR operating systems that work in unison to enhance safety and control. The Octavia is also equipped with adjustable headrests, six airbags and three point adjustable seatbelts.

- Technical. The new Octavia is available with either a diesel or petrol engine, and either a manual or automatic gearbox. Petrol engines include a turbocharged 1.4 TSI 90kw engine and the turbocharged 1.8 TSI with an output of 118kW. The Octavia’s diesel offering is a powerful 2.0 litre turbocharged engine with an output of 103kW.

- Environmental. Both the diesel and petrol engines boast frugality and low CO2 emissions for an environmentally friendly drive.

With added features, a sleek and elegant design and a competitive price tag to boot, the Škoda Octavia is sure to attract buyers’ attention and help Škoda forge a more permanent place in the Australian car market.

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard guaranteed a spotlight on Labor's Greenway candidate Michelle Rowland this morning, visiting the electorate to sell the party's plan to increase the National Trade Cadetship program.

She said up to 50,000 additional work experience places would be provided, with the first batch of students to benefit in 2012.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by Greenway candidate, Michelle Rowland made the announcement at Trivett Honda in Second Avenue.

Ms Gillard said the plan would ensure a skilled workforce. ``These new structured work experience places will provide school students with the practical skills and experience gained in a real work environment,'' she said.

``The places could include spending up to two weeks with a local builder or carpenter, the local engineering firm or even the local holiday resort.

``By gaining firsthand experience of a particular trade and work environments, these structured work experience places with help students' make decision about their future.''

New, extremely frugal generation of TDI engines

The driveline technology has taken a quantum leap. Background: all turbodiesels (TDI) have been replaced by a completely new generation of Euro 5 engines with the latest common rail injection. In total, there are three new 2.0 l TDI four-cylinder engines with output values of 75 kW, 103 kW and 132 kW. Across the board, they offer significantly greater dynamic torque characteristics and improved acoustics.

The new high-end TDI develops a remarkable maximum torque of 400 Newton metres. Thanks to a newly developed pump, the power-assisted steering works more efficiently. This is because unlike the so-called constant pump of conventional design, the new energy-saving pump delivers hydraulic fluid according to demand, so the quantity delivered is always optimal for aiding steering. And this reduces the power consumption of the steering pump and, consequently, fuel consumption.

High-tech campaign

The new generation of this popular van offers numerous further technological highlights. Take the gearbox, for example: instead of the previous option of an automatic gearbox, the Volkswagen Transporter will now be available with the option of a significantly more efficient dual clutch gearbox (DSG). Take the traction distribution, for example: on request, it is possible to order a new, electronically controlled four-wheel drive system (4MOTION with a fourth generation Haldex clutch) that achieves a further improvement in active safety and makes sure that the Transporter derivatives can keep going off road when necessary. The most powerful 4MOTION version (TDI with 132 kW) will also be available with DSG for the first time.

On the move with uncompromising safety

Furthermore, the safety features have been perfected further by having the latest generation ESP fitted as standard (including hill start), a new hazard flash function for the brake lights (emergency braking warning display), optional assistance systems such as Side Assist (warning of vehicles in the blind spot).

Also, a completely newly developed Servotronic system ensures significantly improved steering precision and is a standard feature of the Multivan Highline.

Comfort at the highest standard in the class What is more, the interior now awaits with new, higher quality instruments and steering wheels, a new generation of radio navigation system, fresh fabrics and seats with an even better ergonomic balance.

If you have thought about buying a mid-sized sedan or wagon, you are spoiled for choice! One of the most under-rated and best comes from Skoda. After reading the next few paragraphs, and you are looking to buy a car that is of medium size, then you may want to buy a Skoda Octavia. It hasn't happened, though. Whatever the reason, sales have never really amounted to more than a steady trickle.

Now there's a new Octavia on the streets, boasting different drivetrains, massaged styling, an improved cabin and simplified line-up.

The old Elegance and Ambiente model lines are gone, replaced with a choice of three engines for either hatch or wagon variants.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

Here we're testing the $35,790 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine allied to the latest Volkswagen Group seven-speed dual-clutch auto. But the range starts with a $26,990 1.6L petrol manual hatch (Skoda calls it a "liftback") and stretches to $38,290 for the automatic version with a 2.0L turbo-diesel engine.

The tested car gets dual-zone climate control, six-CD audio, auto headlights and wipers and 16-inch alloys on top of the 1.6's already respectable specification. The sporty RS and Scout 4X4 remain unchanged at the top of the range but get an update later this year.

HOW SAFE?

Six airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control are standard but parking sensors cost more. Given the less than remarkable rear vision, they're probably a good idea.

Skoda is confident the new Octavia's crash safety will rate better than its predecessor's four stars.

WHAT'S INSIDE?

The Octavia's cabin looks much the same as before but the dashboard is new, it is nice to the touch and is better assembled. There's also a different steering wheel, centre console and switchgear exuding a classy, if still somewhat sober, ambience.

Functionally, there's plenty of space up front, loads of spots to stow smaller items and a wide range of steering and seating adjustment. The back seat is less impressive, with acceptable space for taller adults and fewer small-item storage options.

The wagons boot goes from big to positively huge with the back seats folded. You also get bag hooks, 12-volt outlets, luggage tie-downs and a full-size spare.

UNDER THE BONNET
Skoda might be Volkswagen's budget brand but it doesn't miss out on technology.

The 1.8 TSI gets the sane 118kW 1.8- litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dualclutch auto gearbox as the latest Golf.

The 1.8 TSI is smaller than the 2.0 FSI it replaces but superior in every respect. It's more powerful and has more torque, yet is more economical, with auto versions rating 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the official test cycle.

On the road, you'll find a strong supply power on tap from just 1500rpm, with linear delivery right to the redline. It's smooth, refined and used just 7.1L/ 100km on our urban/highway test loop, although preferring premium unleaded.

The seven-speed auto is great on the move, with deliciously sharp shifts and a huge ratio spread but its combination of jerky take-off and too-eager upshift makes it a little awkward in stop-start driving. On hills, progress is noticeably uneven.

ON THE ROAD

Like the old Octavia, this is a solid drive. Turn the well-weighted wheel and the Skoda pretty much just goes where you point it, displaying composure and predictability.

For the most part, the suspension does a good job of cushioning big impacts. However, smaller bumps aren't as well-suppressed and the unrelenting jiggling eventually becomes tiring.

There's plenty of road noise on coarse-chip surfaces and our test car also had plenty of wind noise above the windscreen.

VERDICT

The original Octavia was already good and the new one is that bit better.

The cabin is nicer, the new 1.8 TSI engine is a gem and the simplified line-up should make things easier for potential buyers. However, the Skoda still falls tantalisingly short of brilliant.

It could be quieter and more comfortable, the auto could be better-behaved at times and its presentation while professional - is a little too sober for its own good.

Ultimately, though, these are minor blemishes. If you want a smallish car that's roomy, practical, great to drive and good value, it deserves to be on your shopping list.
