How the Luxury Car Tax will affect You

It's nothing too serious. But...

For the first time in more than 10 years the Luxury Car tax is going to increase from 25% to 33% on vehicles valued above the LCT threshold.

This means that from July 1, 2008 those cars that sell for more than the current $57,123 luxury car threshold (including GST) will increase by around 8%.

The consequence of this is that you now have a rare opportunity to buy a prestige vehicle at a price that won't ever be seen again.

Importantly, this opportunity only applies to vehicles currently in dealer stock - because future orders are yet to reach the taxable point of in Australia, even orders on future stock will be affected by the tax.

The effect of the announcement has already had an effect on market sentiment. Peter Kallitsis, General Manager, Trivett City and Eastern Suburbs made the point - "our enquiry levels increased dramatically the morning following the budget announcement ... whilst people have some questions about the tax increase, it is apparent to everyone that they know there's a great opportunity to buy immediately and save - they are making quick, but informed, decisions and this is increasing our sales activity."
